Panasonic Begins Shipping New AVC-Ultra Camcorder

NEWARK, N.J. – Panasonic recently introduced a new AVC-ULTRA shoulder-mount camcorder, the AJ-PX380. This six-pound 1/3-inch 2.2M 3MOS AVC-ULTRA camcorder offers IT/wireless connectivity capabilities as well as dual codec recording for simultaneous high resolution and proxy image capture.

The new camcorder will be available in two versions: the AJ-PX380GF including camera body, color viewfinder and Fujinon lens; and the AJ-PX380G, a camera-body- only system.

The camcorder is designed for newsgathering, but is also suited for reality TV production, live events and corporate use, said Steve Cooperman, senior product manager for Panasonic.

The PX380s multi-codec AVC-ULTRA offers master-quality and low-bit-rate 10-bit 4:2:2 recording in full raster HD. For instances where high-speed file exchange is needed, high-resolution AVC-proxy encodes in parallel with higher bandwidth production formats.

The camcorder also records in Panasonic’s AVC-LongG to provide on-air content direct from the shooting location and for workflows using content transferred over the Internet. The camera offers three AVC-LongG bit rates: AVC-LongG50/25 providing 10 bit 4:2:2 quality at bit rates of approximately 50/25 Mbps, and AVC-LongG12, which is optimized for field wireless workflows.

The camcorder offers simultaneous dual recording, with choices of HD or SD proxies, and built-in network functions support wired LAN, wireless LAN and 4G/LTE connections.

A built-in camera adaptor function facilitates integration via two BNC cables to the AG-BS300 studio base station. The PX380 also includes a Rec During Uploading function to allow automatic transfer of previously recorded content to an FTP server.

The PX380 is designed to integrate into Panasonic’s P2 Cast cloud-based news system, which adds the flexibility of a file-based workflow and multiple-user access via a private cloud, the company said.

The camcorder was scheduled to begin shipping in late September with the following suggested list price: AJ-PX380GF, $11,995; and the AJ-PX380G camera-body-only for a suggested list price of $8,395.
