OminVision Introduced the ‘OV8865’ Camera-Chip Sensor

The sensor is said to be suited for use in the latest smartphones and tablets

OmniVision Technologies Inc., a developer of digital-imaging solutions, introduced the OV8865, a low-power, 8-megapixel camera-chip sensor that is suited for use in the latest mobile devices, including advanced smartphones and tablets, the company said.
The OV8865 uses less power when compared to the previous-generation OV8835 and the OV8865 offers an improved 1.4-micron OmniBSI-2 pixel, thereby delivering “best-in-class pixel performance in a smaller package,” OmniVision said.
The OV8865 provides a number of performance improvements over the previous generation OV8835 CameraChip sensor, according to OminVision. Those improvements include a 50-percent reduction in dark current and a five-percent improvement in dynamic range, resulting in superior high- and low-light image capture, the company said.
“The 8-megapixel OV8865 has been re-engineered from top to bottom,” said Harish Iyer, the company’s product marketing manager. “With an enhanced 1.4-micron OmniBSI-2 pixel, the OV8865 has improved camera performance and image quality when compared to our last generation 8-megapixel sensor, and offers smaller package-size and lower-power consumption,” he added.
In addition, OminVision said studies forecast that by 2015 there will be more than 1.8 billion smartphones and 250 million tablets produced annually, with the majority of that growth expected to come from developing markets like China and India. Manufacturers in those markets are looking for a cost-competitive camera solution for their slim and feature-rich devices with extended battery life, Iyer said.
