In the latest episode of the
Voices of VR
podcast, Kent Bye speaks to Within co-founder and CTO Aaron Koblin about their new piece
Life of Us
Life of Us
is Within’s first real-time rendered social VR piece. It tells the story of evolution and allows users to interact with one another as they transform from single-celled organisms, to dinosaurs, to apes to humans and beyond.
Says Koblin, “The first couple of years of Within…was about photo-realistic–real faces, real places, and feeling like you’re actually there because we felt like that delivers the deepest connection. You have more ability to relate to the environments. It triggers all kinds of memory and space and place–things that your brain is used to. Where that changed for us is that when you get into an experience with another person, there’s no longer a need to pull the humanity out of the technology. The technology is gushing with this real-life person that you’re actually interacting with…and at that point we realized this is something incredibly powerful. You can connect people from across the planet and multiple friends at the same time and you can actually use this not just for the new form of video-conferencing, but potentially something that’s way more guided and crafted and artistic.”
