IEEE Spectrum's Tekla S. Perry tracks the trajectory of augmented reality in 2016: a year that was predicted to be dominated by Magic Leap and instead saw an unlikely phenomenon emerge in the form of Pokémon Go.

Writes Perry, "Since [the launch of Pokémon Go], many companies have been scrambling in stealth to develop competing AR game apps, and dozens of these apps will likely roll out throughout this year.
