Samsung has partnered with NBC and the Olympic Broadcasting Service to broadcast 80 hours of virtual reality footage from the Rio Summer Olympic Games, available to watch with a Samsung Gear VR headset via the NBC Sports app.
This is expected to be a proof of concept test in the run-up to the 2018 Winter Olympics which take place in Korea, Samsung’s home country.
“It makes sense for Samsung to get as much early experience with the technology as possible so that it can try to take the lead,” Morningstar analyst Dan Baker tells Bloomberg. “Being ahead on the technology curve allows for better returns and profitability.”
