‘Ctrl’ Mixes Live Theater with VR

Experimental play "Ctrl" is a 20-minute narrative experience that takes place in virtual reality, with the audience donning headsets for the entire run of the show.

Breaking Fourth’s experimental play Ctrl is a 20-minute narrative experience that takes place in virtual reality, with the audience donning headsets for the entire run of the show.

Writes The Nerd Pirates, “Ctrl doesn’t delve too deep into the broader formal possibilities of storytelling with VR. Inside the virtual world, the action plays mostly on screens in front, behind, and to the sides of us, meaning that our decisions to look ‘wherever we want’ as spectators doesn’t mean a huge amount. But this all serves a greater purpose: allowing VR to be the MEDIUM OF not the ACCESSORY TO storytelling. Sure, the concept is simple, and, in its 20 minute format, Ctrl keeps too tight a lid on its character development, leaving Liam, ‘Mum’, Mark and the commentators a little flat at times. But Breaking Fourth’s work is all about breaking down the boundaries between art and VR. And in that, they’re unbeatable.”

The experience is coming soon to the Samsung Gear VR. Read the full story here.
