News Apps Shift Away From Live Video to On-Demand Video

The Wall Street Journal video app has changed its name from WSJ Live to WSJ Video, signifying a bigger trend in the news market of shifting frm a focus on live appointment-viewing video toward slickly produced, on-demand packages.

Says Andy Regal, executive editor of video at Wall Street Journal to Nieman Journalism Lab, “People come to the Wall Street Journal when they have time, or need a break or when there’s a big event. If we continue to try to drive people to appointment television, it’s just not a workable business model. That’s been proven by most who have tried it.”
