x10 Studio Uses Fusion Studio to Create In Game Cutscenes for “Monster Hunter 4G”

Fremont, CA - October 20, 2015 - Blackmagic Design today announced that Kyoto based x10 Studio (cross ten studio) used Fusion Studio for cutscenes of the popular hunting action game by Capcom, “Monster Hunter 4G.” 

x10 Studio is a boutique CGI and production company handling commercials, games and anime, as well as services for exhibition and projection mapping. Astushi Matsumoto, one of the founders and CGI directors of x10 Studio, has been using Fusion since 1999.

Matsumoto spoke about the cutscenes for the new popular game made by CAPCOM, “The director of the commercial wanted to depict the hunters’ uplifting feeling towards hunting. This time, we tried to depict the more ordinary life of those hunters, such as eating and drinking beer.”

Matsumoto built a workflow where each designer can see the final look of shots by making basic composites for all shots in the early stages of production. “By doing so, we could be more efficient and flexible to last minute changes. For example, we made a color image for all shots used for the commercial.” After adding lighting with CG, he used Fusion to create a room with light sources of different color temperatures. When the animatics were done, he created a base composite for each shot based on the animatics.

While Matsumoto himself was creating CG, he updated composite data using other CG material from the other designers so everybody could work on sharing the final composite looks. “With this workflow, we could concentrate on the more creative side of work. This is a huge merit for a small studio like us,” he continued. “For sizzle shots of the hunters eating meat, I imported the CG of the meat with animation as an FBX file, and added shading and lighting in Fusion. There was a scene where some light sources from the ceiling lit objects in a room. I had FBX files of cameras for all shots, so I used Fusion’s volume mask to adjust the position of those CG cameras.”

Matsumoto said: “Because Fusion’s nodes are well designed and organized, allowing our workflow to keep simple, we don’t get confused even when we have a complex project. I like that I can open multiple composite files so that I can copy and paste nodes, so applying the settings to each composite is easy. Also, the process of compositing is visualized so it is easy to work on a project with other tools.”

“The advantage of Fusion Studio is its affordability and the ease of learning. Even those who are not familiar with node base composition, they tend to quickly learn the software. And above all, the response of operation. It allows me to create something before my flash of inspiration, or ideas, disappear,” concluded Matsumoto.
