VOLT Launches Creative Editorial With Erik Carlson

Publish date:

Award-winning editor Erik Carlson has signed with VOLT for exclusive representation, marking the launch of creative editorial at the VFX/Motion Design studio. With this signing, VOLT has just completed the build-out of the company’s inaugural edit suite, now home to Carlson.

Carlson’s introduction to working at VOLT came through noteworthy freelance collaborations on 2011 campaigns: the Cannes award-winning H&R Block for Fallon, the National Geographic’s King Tut exhibition campaign and the Subaru Grand Opening campaign both via Carmichael Lynch. This experience launched VOLT’s longstanding plan to integrate creative editorial with the right talent in place.

“We've been waiting a long time to get into creative edit, and truly great editors like Erik are rare, explains VOLT Founder Steve Medin. “He's an A-level talent who truly cares about what he does and he's a blast to be around. We have long-standing relationships with the best ad people in town and Erik does as well, so it made sense to put it all together. We hope to grow creative edit here at VOLT, but will do so carefully. Erik has set the bar high...”

“Erik is incredibly smart, passionate editor who puts himself deeply into each job,” says Fallon Creative Director Scott O'Leary. “His energy is contagious and instinct for story, sourcing music and clarity of opinion make him a great resource that we are lucky to have in Minneapolis.”

From a young age, Erik loved filmmaking and banded together with middle school friends to produce cable access shows and other independent projects. His commercial career was launched at Fallon’s in house editorial department, where he had the opportunity to work with leading agency and directorial talent including Errol Morris on PBS “Light,” Scott Vincent on Holiday Inn Express and on “Salami Fighting Association” with Paul Malmstrom and Linus Karlsson. He worked there from 1999 – 2003, and became known for editing at the intersection of comedy and story.

“Just starting out in the business and having the opportunity to work with the some of the top craftspeople in the world of storytelling was amazing,” recalls Carlson.

After working at Fallon, Carlson moved to San Francisco to edit for Mad River Post from 2004-2006. There, he edited national spots for British Airways, EA Games and Arby’s, among others, before moving to Los Angeles from 2007-2008. In LA, Carlson cut various projects including Bud Light via Rival Editorial, JVC for Red Three, along with the short film “Butterscotch Dawn” for Director Jon Nowak. Having returned to Minneapolis in 2009 Erik freelanced for Fallon on their Charter campaign, as well as BBDO New York's popular Red Stripe online campaign, before he joined forces with Volt.

“I've worked in shops on both coasts, and Volt is as smart and creative as they come. There's a great vibe here, it's awesome to be apart of it,” concludes Carlson.
