Regarding the project, Randy Cordray, producer of “Unhitched, said, “Working with Buster was the best experience I’ve ever had working with a graphic design company. Mark, Brad and Jonas all know this game, they’re very talented, fast, efficient, adaptable and extremely creative. They really cared about this project, and put in so much energy and enthusiasm every step of the way. When they pitched us, they didn’t just show us one idea, they showed us 6—all equally brilliant. They really wanted this assignment, and we were thrilled to give it to them. I can’t wait to work with them again on my next TV show.
ABOUT STUN/BUSTER’S WORK ON “UNHITCHED:
Morganstein said, “The challenge with this open was how to establish the premise of the show – that four long-time friends reunite with each other after each of their relationships hits the skids. It’s like ‘Friends’ ten years later – after all the enthusiastic hopes and dreams fall flat and the core group rekindles their friendships to form a surrogate family. They come out of failure to find strength and humor in each other. It was that dark comedy and stoic world view wrapped in an uncharacteristically positive attitude that is a trademark of the Farrelly oeuvre. That and their twisted sense of humor are evident here in abundance.â€?
Executive Producer Mike Sikowitz and “Unhitched creators Mike Bernier and Chris Pappas came to Stun/Buster with the basic premise of ripping apart wedding photographs to nihilistically symbolize each failed union. That theme was then taken to the next level – inventing unique ways for each relationship to self-destruct. Stun and Buster’s goal was to create a show open that would do the hard work of establishing the back story of this new TV series by quickly telling the story with an edgy attitude and sense of humor that is the hallmark of the show.
The action seen in the show open is as follows: The viewer first sees a wedding photograph of Gator (Craig Bierko) and his wife. The wife then dashes out of the frame, leaving Gator in shock. Next, we meet Kate (Rashida Jones) – frozen in a photo of tender embrace with her ex-boyfriend (much taller than Kate –only his chin viewable in the frame). Kate cuts that photo in half with a pair of scissors. Next, Dr. Freddy (Shuan Majumder) and his wife are introduced in a framed wedding photo. The photo cracks, symbolizing the grim end to that marriage. Old friends Gator and Kate cheerfully push the frame away as Freddy steps out of the photo with great relief.
Next up, serial groom Tommy (Johnny Sneed), cheerfully steps into multiple wedding photographs . As soon as the flash bulbs fade out, each marriage is over, and Tommy exits the frame, jumping into to the next doomed union. After exiting marriage photo #3, Tommy dashes off to join his friends, slamming into the show logo as he rushes into the frame – sending the logo off-kilter. Morganstein adds, “This frenetic action is symbolic of the twisted, screwed-up world these characters inhabit.
The Stun/Buster crew designed and animated the open, working closely with the show’s creators and writing team along the way. Randy Cordray, one of the producers of the new series, directed the talent for the green screen shoot – with the Stun/Buster team supervising.
