Sorenson Media’s Cloud-Based Mobile Reference Apps Enhance Video Capture, Preserve Quality and Streamline Workflows • Mobile Reference Apps, Included with Sorenson Squeeze Server, Enable Companies to Deploy Video Capture and Upload from Mobile Devices, including Android and iOS • Server-Based Transcoding of Mobile Source Video Ensures Superior Video Quality over Conventional Approaches SAN DIEGO (July 12, 2011) – Sorenson Media today introduced Mobile Reference Apps, a new feature within the company’s high-volume Sorenson Squeeze Server video encoding product line that significantly improves users’ ability to capture, encode and publish high-quality video online. The new Mobile Reference Apps, included with Squeeze Server (Squeeze Server On-Premise and the cloud-based Squeeze Solution Pack) enable users to easily capture video content from any major mobile device – including iPhones, and Android-based phones and tablets. The content can then be uploaded, encoded and published to virtually any destination, including content delivery networks (CDNs), online video platforms (OVPs), or any selected folder or over entire networks. Sorenson Squeeze Server, built on the gold-standard Sorenson Squeeze encoding engine, is a high-volume video encoding solution that can be easily scaled up and down according to a user’s variable encoding and transcoding needs and employs video encoding presets, created by encoding experts, to increase the quality of the video encoding process. Sorenson Media’s Mobile Reference Apps provide users with significant advantages compared with conventional options. With Mobile Reference Apps, once the video content has been captured, the process of encoding the video content from its native format is performed with Squeeze Server rather than directly on the user’s device. “By encoding the video within the device, competing solutions substantially degrade video quality, rendering the ability of Android and iPhone devices to capture high-quality 720p video essentially meaningless,” said Charles Sismondo, vice president of engineering at Sorenson Media. “By leveraging our mobile technology to take care of source preservation at the front-end of the workflow as well as our encoding technology and publishing backend, Mobile Reference Apps empower users to capture, upload, encode, manage and publish the industry’s highest-quality video, propelling online video into a higher orbit.” Mobile video encoding has become increasingly critical for both consumer and business uses as video capture on mobile devices continues to grow worldwide. According to a report by the Pew Research Center, 34 percent of adults used their mobile devices to record video in 2010, up from 19 percent in 2009. In addition to the quality advantage provided by Sorenson Media’s Mobile Reference Apps, Sorenson Squeeze Server maximizes ease of deployment for businesses through white-labeling – eliminating the time-consuming process of creating a backend app for mobile devices. Companies can work with the Sorenson Media team to apply their organization’s preferred look and feel to Sorenson Squeeze Server’s fully-functioning app. “The new performance and functionality benefits that Mobile Reference Apps bring to Sorenson Squeeze Server further illustrate why Sorenson Media is the video encoding solution of choice for the enterprise and small-to-medium businesses alike,” said Sismondo. “These enhanced features will further solidify our industry encoding advantage, making it an unparalleled tool for a host of uses – from encoding and publishing user-generating content on sites like YouTube to reporters in news organizations loading quality breaking news video content directly from the field to real estate brokers and agents uploading enticing video images of a home the moment it hits the market, just to name a few. With this new feature, we are serving notice of our commitment to continual innovation.” Recently Sorenson Media was recognized for its long-term ongoing innovation with a spot on the inaugural AlwaysOn OnMobile 100 list of the “emerging companies” transforming industry and developing compelling business models for the mobile marketplace.
