SUNNYVALE, Calif. — Aug. 21, 2008 —
NY1, New York City’s 24/7 all-news station, is using an Omneon Spectrum™ media server as an end-to-end field production solution to support up-to-the minute, comprehensive coverage at the two U.S. political conventions taking place this month. The Spectrum server employed by NY1 provides a single storage platform for ingest, editing, and final transfer of finished material back to New York headquarters. Material shot in DV25 SD 4:1:1 is ingested to the Spectrum server as file transfers from NY1’s Panasonic P2 cameras and made immediately available to six Apple® Final Cut Pro® workstations using ProRes 422. The edit-in-place capability provided by the Omneon Spectrum allows the workstations to share and edit material residing on the system without transferring or copying files. Completed stories saved on the Spectrum server are formatted as .mov files and then sent as baseband video via fiber to NY1’s Manhattan facility for final transmission and Webcasting. NY1 anticipates that simultaneous access to content stored on the Spectrum system will result in a 50 percent improvement in workflow efficiency compared with the station’s experience at past conventions. That improvement will translate into more timely updates and more thorough coverage for viewers. “From the technical standpoint, we expect these to be the easiest conventions we’ve ever done, said Michael Chan, NY1 director of technical operations. “The major reason is the Omneon equipment. For us, the ability to share clips and to secure them — with no tape to misplace — makes a tremendous difference. And as for setup, once the network with the FCP stations has been established, it’s a matter of plugging it in, hooking up the wire, flipping a switch, and it’s done. We are happy and confident going on the road with Omneon. Omneon Senior Vice President of Products and Markets Geoff Stedman said, “A local station competing in 24/7 news in the discerning New York market has tremendous pressures. The decision by NY1 to leverage cutting-edge technology for efficiency gains, and to adopt the Spectrum system for its all-in-one solution for field production, helps the station address these pressures and deliver the high-quality content expected by its viewers. # # #
