New York, NY – (February 12, 2008) – To create a powerful PSA for Partnership for a Drug-Free America, VH1 recently turned to the talents of Northern Lights Editor David Gioiella. Featuring renowned doctor and TV personality Dr. Drew Pinsky, “Silent Scream is a disturbingly elegant message of reaching out to people with substance abuse problems. To view, please go to

An elegant orchestral track is punctuated by the chilling sounds of distorted breathing as the individuals struggle to make themselves heard. “Even if you can’t hear their cries, if someone you know has a problem with drugs or alcohol, they need your help, says Dr. Drew. “Substance abuse treatment can help, especially with the support of family and friends. Give them a voice. The spot was concepted and directed by Melissa Bolton-Klinger, Director of Multiplatform and Pro-Social Creative at VH1, and was shot and finished in HD. “The concept was meant to show how difficult it is to ask for help when you have a problem with drugs or alcohol, explains Bolton-Klinger. “I loved working with David. He really knows how to make moving images shine. “Editorially, we wanted to illustrate simple human moments in a disturbing way,“ explains Gioiella. “This was done by contrasting compassionate imagery with dramatic audio. Northern Lights Sound Designer Ted Gannon cut eerie breaths in place of syllables to form almost intelligible sounds trailing from the actors’ mouths. "The result has a creepy and unsettling effect that enhances the silent scream concept," says Gioiella. The PSA has been well received since it began airing in late January, driving significant visitor traffic to the PDFA website. It is currently running on VH1, AMC and MTV with plans to expand to additional networks.
