Consoles Take On Multi-Role Functions
PROVO, UT â€“ LDS Motion Picture Studio, a division of the Audio/Visual department of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS), recently upgraded its two primary audio control rooms, Studio A and Studio B, with Solid State Logic C300 HD Master Studio Systems, Delta Link MADI HD units and a shared 24-input C-SB Stagebox for remote microphone setup and control. The inherent flexibility of the C300 made it the ideal choice for the multi-role functions each console fulfills for everything from 70mm film productions to training videos at the busy 25-acre facility.
â€œWe were looking for a console that was very flexible because we do so many different types of productions that involve different audio applications,â€? says Bo Bahoravitch, equipment manager for the Audio/Visual Department of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. â€œFor example, Studio A is essentially our scoring stage where we can record a full orchestra or any type of music. The room also has our Foley pits and we do ADR work in there as well. This divergence of use necessitated a console that could readily reconfigure itself and the C300 was perfect for the job.â€?
Known for its high quality programs and films, LDS Motion Picture Studio has a very full production schedule, so time on task is sometimes a shared commodity. An ADR session, for instance, might need to be wrapped around a music scoring session. The automation and recall of the C300 makes the transition back and forth between the different disciplines quick and easy. Another plus with the C300 is the sound quality of an SSL console.
Says Steve Kingsolver, post production manager for LDS Motion Picture Studio, â€œSince the rooms were completed several months ago, weâ€™ve had several composers and musicians comment that they really love the sound they are getting with the C300. We always know going into a session that the sound quality is inherently good and we can shape what we need from there.
We also configured both rooms with a C300 so that our engineers can seamlessly do a recording session in Studio A, transfer the audio and console settings over to Studio B and complete a 5.1 surround mix. This capability really streamlines our production schedules.â€?
The two C300 HD consoles offer 48-channel faders with a Centuri Processor outfitted for maximum DSP allowing for up to 512 channels at 24-bit/48kHz or 259 channels at 24-bit/96kHz. LDS Motion Picture Studio typically runs the console at 24-bit/96kHz. Studio A, the main scoring stage, has four 24-channel analogue I/O cards and two 64-channel AES cards. Studio B enjoys a control room that is twice the size of Studio A and this is where the 5.1 surround mixing is completed. The C300 in Studio B has three 24-channel analogue I/O cards, one 12-input Mic/Line card and two 64-channel AES cards. The pathway to the resident Pro ToolsÂ® systems is through SSL Delta Link MADI HD units â€“ four in each control room.
