iO Film Serves “Indies” with Nucoda Film Master

Stockholm, Sweden and Burbank, CA - 29 November 2006 - Digital Vision, a leading developer of advanced digital media applications for film and video, today announced that iO Film, a top post facility in Hollywood, recently completed DI work on two independent films, “Man in the Chair” and “Nobel Son” using its Nucoda Film Master system. The two projects represent the growing trend in independent filmmaking toward incorporating digital intermediate (DI) processes to deliver a high-quality result.

“Man in the Chair,” written and directed by Michael Schroeder, tells the story of a rebellious teen with aspirations of being a film director who enlists the help of a senior citizen crew to make a film on the plight of the elderly for a local competition. It features Christopher Plummer and Robert Wagner, and was shot using two 35mm cameras throughout the film, as well as hand-cranked cameras. The DP was Dana Gonzalez, (“Crash”) who had participated in the DI process at iO Film using Film Master on that feature as well.

Schroeder said, “You can save a lot by shooting 3-perf, and that commits you to a DI. All of the different formats we had, including old 1” black-and-white footage, were blended and colourized in the DI. If we had to achieve that using photochemical processes or even visual effects, the lab costs would have taken a large chunk of the overall budget. By doing a DI we were able to apply that budget to creative tasks. He added, “It‘s a myth that independent films can‘t afford DI. I can‘t afford not to have it, and I couldn‘t have done this project without iO Film.”

“Nobel Son,” a comedy directed by Randall Miller, features Danny DeVito and Mary Steenbergen. iO Film colourist Michael Mintz employed the Film Master system for primarily creative reasons - to help achieve Miller‘s goal of creating particular looks for specific scenes, to intensify the drama. In one scene, a hostage situation, Mintz used Film Master‘s deep grading toolset to create a very high-contrast, almost skip-bleach/bleach-bypass look. “It gave the director the ‘uncomfortable‘ look he was going for,” said Mintz. To create the overall ‘sharp‘ look Miller had in mind for the entire film, Mintz made extensive use of the Film Master‘s aperture tool to intensify the already-sharp scans using the DI system.
