id Software Employs modo to Model Assets for Highly Anticipated Game “Rage”

, Oct. 4, 2011, The designers of id Software’s eagerly anticipated game title Rage populated their post-apocalyptic game with incredibly realistic objects, textures and environments through the innovative and time-saving employment of Luxology’s modo. Most of the game’s models that are integral for gameplay, like the props, weapons and vehicles, were built in modo. Designers found modo to be an ideal tool for level design, and allowed a unified game development pipeline between asset creators and level designers.
“Modeling in modo is faster than using a level editor application, and we really enjoy the precise control we get over our level work, which would be impossible to do with only brushes or modular models,” says Seneca Menard, lead technical artist at Dallas, Texas-based id Software. “Plus, most of the tools needed for game design and development are already in modo, and that’s what we love about it.”
The gameplay and graphics of Rage are highly realistic and based on the company’s id Tech 5 engine. The extensive modeling, UV editing, and texture baking tools found in modo greatly aided the designers’ ability to create levels comprised of completely unique pixels and polygons, avoiding the repetitive look that would have resulted from instancing techniques. To ensure players will see every bit of the graphics quality, id Software chose to use a 60fps running speed for Rage, rather than the typical 30fps.
Rage is the latest first-person shooter game from legendary developer id Software, the acclaimed designers of such classics as the Wolfenstein, DOOM, and QUAKE series.
