Formatt Introduces Five New Filters for High-Definition DV

New Contrast Filters Expand Options for Creating More Impressive HD Video

Las Vegas, N.V. (April 20, 2009) – Formatt Filters, a manufacturer of precision glass filters for the professional video market, showcased five new filters for high-definition DV at NAB 2009. Designed to specifically to meet industry demand for improved high-definition image quality, the new HD Full Frame Contrast, HD Low Contrast, HD Soft Contrast Cool, HD Soft Contrast Warm and HD Soft White Mist filters further extend Formatt’s full range of high performance, high-definition filtration solutions for cinematographers, DPs and videographers.

HD Low Contrast Filter
As the name implies, Formatt’s new HD Low Contrast filter helps reduce contrast levels, allowing more detail to be visible in shadows. The HD Low Contrast filter spreads light into shadows areas that occur in the general vicinity of the light source, an effect which may create a slight flaring as well as muted pastel colors. Formatt has taken the three most popular densities of the standard Low Contrast Filter and redesigned them into the new HD Low Contrast filter in densities one, two and three.

HD Full Frame Contrast Filter
Formatt’s HD Full Frame Contrast filter helps reduce contrast in high-definition DV by spreading the ambient light throughout the scene, an effect which lightens all of the shadow areas so that more detail can be seen. The lit areas remain unaffected and there is no flare or halation. The new HD Full Frame Contrast filter can be used to lessen the harshness of high definition video and create what some call “the film look. The HD Full Frame Contrast filter is available in densities one, two and three.

HD Soft Contrast Cool Filter
The heavy-duty HD Soft Contrast Cool filter is a combination of a softening filter and a low contrast filter. The HD Soft Contrast Cool Filter is available in three grades of cool blue softening effect, in densities one, two and three.

HD Soft Contrast Warm Filter
The HD Soft Contrast Warm filter is a combination of a softening filter and a low contrast filter. Formatt’s HD Soft Contrast Warm filter offers a lighter contrast effect than the HD Soft Contrast Cool filter and is also available in three grades of warm softening effect, in densities one, two and three.

HD Soft White Mist Filter
The new HD Soft White Mist filter is intended to give a soft feel to any image and creates a “mist effect using the refractive diffusion technology first found in Formatt’s HD Gold Enhancing Filter. Different than traditional mist filters, the HD Soft White Mist filter is designed to provide a high-quality softening without diffusion and color split. The filter’s unique design enables the softening to be concentrated at a medium distance focal point, leaving the background unaffected. Rather than “misting the entire scene, Formatt’s HD Soft White Mist filter improves the subject with less of an effect on the background. The HD Soft White Mist filter is available in densities one, two and three.

Formatt filters are manufactured using Schott B270 Super White® optical lens glass that is precision polished and ground to ensure absolute optical flatness and optimum performance. Each filter is guaranteed flatness to a maximum 2 to 3 wave value and comes with an individual reading from a laser interferometer. Every filter is carefully verified with a densitometer and spectrophotometer to ensure consistent and accurate transmission before leaving the factory, resulting in an absolute purity of image that eliminates any unwanted colorcast caused by conventional greenish soda-lime glass.

All Formatt filters are finished with a unique edge frame that offers maximum protection against chipping, surface scratches and enables easy handling and cleaning. With the filter description on top of the frame it also makes identification of the filter much easier especially when filters are stored in cases on location.

All Filters are available in round sizes 52, 58, 62, 67, 72, 77, 82, 86, 95, 105, 127, 138, Series 9 and 4.5 inch round. Square sizes are also available in 3×3 3mm, 3×3 4mm, 4×4 3mm, 4×4 4mm, 4×5.65, 5×5, 5.65×5.65, 6×4 and 6.6×6.6. Special order sizes are available by request.
