Filmmaker Nick Tomnay Returns To Wild(child) Editorial For Representation in The Spot Arena

has signed alumnus Nick Tomnay for commercial representation in the US. The Aussie native, who did a four-year stint at the NY-based spot house, reconnects with Wild(child) after moving to LA in 20010 to direct and edit his debut feature film,

‘The Perfect Host,’

starring David Hyde Pierce. Tomnay, who also wrote the script for the film, recently returned to New York to cut a spot for Wild(child), rekindling his love of the city and passion for the commercial genre.

Yvette Pineyro, owner of Wild(child) Editorial, a 100% minority woman-owned company, helms her Flatiron-based boutique’s team of in-house editors, as well as the select roster of international talent that it represents in the US commercial market. She first signed Nick to her staff of spot editors in 2005, soon after he moved to New York from Sidney. In 2008 Tomnay began editing The Perfect Host at Wild(child), which also has built a reputation for its film work. (Most recently David Leonard cut Al Pacino’s indie film Wild Salome at Wild(child). The tour de force, which the Oscar winner directed and stared in, premiered last month at the Venice Film Festival.)

“Nick is an extraordinary multi-dimensional talent who brings a level of emotion and power to his editing that makes him a perfect fit for the commercial genre,” says Pineyro, an award-winning editor and 2011 AICE nominee (fashion + beauty category) for the Givenchy spot, Play, starring Justin Timberlake.

During Tomnay’s four-years at Wild(child) Editorial his skills as a storyteller attracted a mix of national and global spots from agencies such as Y&R, Saatchi & Saatchi, Ogilvy, Leo Burnett, McCann Erickson and FCB.

“Nick’s experience as a writer, director and film editor brings a cinematic sensibility to his spot work that agencies really appreciated. Quite a few of his clients having been asking when he would be available for commercial work again,” say Pineyro. “He returned this summer to cut the Botox spot, A Maybe Life: Missing, out of Grey Advertising and produced by Believe Media, and it was really great having him back here again. Nick is not only a talented editor, but also an all around great guy. Everyone – from clients to our staff – enjoys working with him. I’m thrilled to be representing him in the commercial arena.”

“I had a great time cutting the commercial and reconnecting with Wild(child),” says Tomnay, who’s been editing spots over ten-years ago. “I was reminded that storytelling is the same – whether it’s in a spot or a feature film. An equal amount of attention to detail is required to make something sing. The idea of balance is the same, and getting the tone just so is the greatest challenge in both forms. I’ve always been drawn to short-form storytelling. Even when there is no dialogue telling the story in a spot, my natural tendency is to create one.“

Ironically, the accomplished screenwriter, feature film editor and director hasn’t had the opportunity to edit many dialogue commercials. Early in his career a string of high-profile, visually arresting non-dialogue spots that he cut received a lot of attention, and he’s been attracting more of the same ever since.

“I’m looking forward to working with Wild(child) and bringing my experience to more dialogue spots, which is where my strength really lies,” adds Tomnay.

A native of Sydney, Australia, Nick Tomnay graduated art school in the 90’s and soon began working as an assistant editor and then editor, cutting commercials, documentaries, and music videos while pursuing his goal to become a filmmaker. An editor at Winning Post Productions in Sydney, in 2000 he began freelancing before moving to the US in 2004.
In 2001 Tomnay wrote and directed The Host, the short film on which The Perfect Host is based. It premiered at Tribeca Film Festival and won numerous honors, including Seattle’s Golden Space Needle Award, AFI (Australia) Best Short Film Award, and IF Best Short Film Award. In 2006 Tomnay was handpicked out of a number of Australian high-profile directors to direct an episode of Bryan Brown’s series Two Twisted, entitled Jailbreak.

Tomnay wrote, directed and edited The Perfect Host, a comedic psychological thriller starring Emmy and Tony Award winning actor, David Hyde Pierce, which premiered as an official selection at the Sundance Film Festival in 2010 and opened in theaters this summer. The debut feature film received an award at Imagine: 27th Amsterdam Fantastic Film Festival and was an official selection at and Sitges Film Festival. His roster of commercial work includes spots for agencies such as Y&R, Saatchi & Saatchi, Ogilvy, Leo Burnett, McCann Erickson and FCB.
