Directors Nick Piper and David Hicks Join B-Reel Films Expanding Roster

LOS ANGELES, CA – January 25, 2011 –

B-Reel Films

announced today the signing of Director Nick Piper for exclusive representation. Based in Los Angeles, Piper is currently completing a GMC Chevrolet campaign via B-Reel Films: two of the eight spots he’s lensing for GMC convey a spontaneous, humanistic angle while the other six show Piper’s trademark slo-mo, testosterone-infused metal visual concepts (Piper is particularly renowned for his automotive reel, where he frequently combines VFX with epic, rugged-looking vehicle photography).

Recently, Piper was inspired by a bizarre idea for a quirky short film about a character who wakes up one morning to find he’s floating on the ceiling. The film is called Helium Man and has already screened in L.A.; it will be at film festivals in Austin, Atlanta and New York this Spring 2011.

Piper spent more than 1000 hours of time on the Flame to complete the film (while simultaneously celebrating the birth of his 2 week old son).

Prior to joining B-Reel Films, from 2002 to 2010, Piper was with Backyard Productions, where he lensed campaigns for brands including AT&T, Aquafina, Kia, Nissan, Cadillac, Kawasaki, Buick, Chevy, Advil, Lincoln and Coors.

Before Backyard, from 1998 to 2002, Piper worked as a director at Plum Productions Рwhere he was a prot̩g̩ of famed director Eric Saarinen. From 1996 to 1998, Piper honed his arsenal of visual effects techniques at production studio a52 (currently he is a partner at VFX studio Chemical Effects).

Born and raised in Lancashire, England, Piper attended Oxford University from 1987 to 1990 to pursue an MA in Mathematics.

Spot-helmer David Hicks has also been tapped by B-Reel Films to the company’s U.S. and European film production roster. This past year has been particularly successful for Hicks, who is currently a partner at Canadian production company Sons and Daughters. At the 2008 Bessies Awards, his Diet 7up campaign won various awards including two Gold spots single, Gold spots campaign as well as the Best in Show Award. The Cannes Lions 2008 show recognized Hicks with a silver win for the Diet 7up campaign for “Elevator Small Talk Tony, and “Emoticon Susan in the non-alcoholic beverages category. In 2009 a Hicks-directed spot for Tropicana Taxi received a Bronze at the Cannes Lion event.

Prior to his career as a director, Hicks was a well-known commercial editor; in 1996 he co-founded Panic & Bob Editing where he regularly collaborated with many of the industry’s top directors including Kuntz and Macguire, Noam Murro, Bryan Buckley, and Craig Gillespie to name a few.
