LOS ANGELES— Thor, who is represented in the U.S. by
, has directed a
for Czech car maker Škoda and Leagas Delaney, Hamburg, in which a couple goes on a fantastic drive through an urban jungle. The spot, produced by Germany’s TempoMedia with production support in Madrid from The Mamma Team, shows the couple behind the wheel of a Yeti on a city street. When the woman presses the car’s off-road button, the environment around them is magically transformed with a waterfall cascading down the side of a building, tropical birds filling the air and ghostly elephants blocking a street. Another touch of the button makes the wild apparitions disappear.
The spot features a highly unusual and difficult to pull of blend of live action and 3D projections. For Thor, the compressed shooting scheduled was challenging due to the number of plates that needed to be shot for visual effects purposes. The production was further complicated by the arrival of a violent storm, but Thor took it all in stride. “We were running two units, one for principal photography and one for the car shots,” he recalls. “I was setting up shots on the fly while running between the two units and dealing with small issues like the windows of our camera car fogging up in the pouring rain.”
Visual effects for the tour-de-force piece were performed by London’s Absolute.
