MaxMedia designs and develops social media app “NBA All-Star Pulse”

HELPING PROMOTE THIS WEEK’S NBA ALL-STAR GAME, DIGITAL AGENCY DELIVERS FIRST-EVER LIVE EVENT SOCIAL ACTIVITY VISUALIZER BUILT ENTIRELY OFF FACEBOOK DATA

ATLANTA, GA – February 18, 2011 – Cementing Atlanta-based

MaxMedia’s

position as innovative social media marketing strategists, the company today unveiled its latest project for Turner Sports and the NBA, a custom social media application that displays Facebook trending topics from the NBA All-Star game in Los Angeles this February 18-20. MaxMedia’s

“NBA All-Star Pulse

app creates a visual representation of the events trending topics – such as NBA players, legends, sportscasters, events, and celebrities – by searching all Facebook posts and comments. The app elevates the latest and most popular topics for fans everywhere to see.

The interactive

All-Star Pulse

destination may be the first-ever live-event social activity visualizer built entirely on Facebook data. MaxMedia Executive Creative Director Thomas W. Frank comments, “This project illustrates MaxMedia’s ability to deliver world-class solutions that utilize emerging technologies and best in class design. While we designed the NBA All-Star Pulse app to enable effortless user interactions, the project required us to develop sophisticated ‘behind-the-scenes’ data aggregation utilizing the Facebook API – a technical feat that was difficult to accomplish and possibly never done before… all of this in slightly less than 3 weeks.

MaxMedia’s Director of Technology James Wright adds that “from a technical standpoint, the

All-Star Pulse

app features an innovative dynamically scalable infrastructure spread across two cloud providers (Rackspace CloudServers and Amazon EC2) and three cloud services (Rackspace, Heroku, EngineYard). These ‘clouds’ can provide real-time data to 5 million users over the course of a 72-hour window (the length of the three-day All-Star Game). We anticipate handling up to 80,000 requests per second and up to 350,000 concurrent users. Consequently the agency ramped up and built a system infrastructure that runs over 20 servers at peak load, using a variety of technologies.

Frank concludes, “The NBA and Turner Sports are looking to continue to engage their audience in innovative ways, in particular by leveraging social media to build the NBA brand. The

All-Star Pulse

app will ultimately create brand value as well as sponsorship opportunities for them.

MaxMedia

President Keehln Wheeler comments, “Congratulations to Thomas and James for the herculean efforts they put towards creating the NBA

All-Star Pulse

app. This project tapped all our strategic, creative and technical interactive marketing capabilities, resulting in a truly rich and unique user experience of the NBA All-Star Game.”
