Thomson Opens New Digital Post-Production and Film Laboratory Facility in New York

Technicolor’s State-of-the-Art Facility Destined to be New York’sGo-to Destination For Project Completion

New York, New York – As part of its North American entertainmentindustry growth strategy, Thomson (Euronext Paris:18453, NYSE:TMS)announced the grand opening of Technicolor’s new state-of-the-artpost-production facility at 110 Leroy Street in West Greenwich Village.The new facility is destined to become the destination of choice forthe most complete post-production facility in New York City and willalso become home to Technicolor’s storied New York film laboratory,which will be relocated from Midtown in 2004 after its threedecade-long presence on West 44th Street.

The combined efforts of Technicolor and its Creative Servicesdivision will coalesce in providing New York’s production community, aswell as Technicolor’s studio, advertising, broadcast and cablecustomers with a new robust palette of services and resources in LowerManhattan. This new facility adds to Thomson recent investments in postproduction to broaden its service offering and client base, includingthe recent acquisitions of Pacifica Media Affiliates, VidFilm, andStill in Motion, among others. Technicolor Entertainment Servicesbusiness represented revenues of 650M€ in 2002, with facilitiesin 6 cities and approximately 3,200 employees worldwide.

To kick-off this effort, Technicolor is showcasing its new facilityby hosting a customer event to inaugurate the first of its operationsto go online, Technicolor Creative Services’ Post-Production facility,with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and private reception. Customers will bejoined by Thomson CEO, Charles Dehelly, and Thomson Digital MediaSolutions SEVP, Lanny Raimondo; along with the Mayor’s Office FilmCommissioner, Katherine Oliver, to celebrate this investment in NewYork.

TCS-New York has built-out two floors of the Leroy Street address,including a newly appointed screening theatre on the first floor, andnine post production suites on the second floor. Post-productioncustomers will find the best technology available anywhere in theworld, including Thomson Grass Valley’s Spirit DataCine and multipleShadow HD Telecines, along with da Vinci 2K Plus color correctionsystems, New York’s first virtual telecine system, a digitalintermediate color correction capability featuring da Vinci 2K Plus anda JVC DILA 2K projection system, as well as a discreet™post-production system featuring Fire, Combustion and Backdraftsoftware applications.

Adding to this new state-of-the art post facility will be anexceptional line-up of top-notch industry talent led by industryveteran Alfie Schloss, who will manage TCS post-production operation.Recent additions to the operating team include a slate of world-classcolorists led by CIO/senior colorist John Dowdell, and one of the topcolorists in the New York commercial production community, Joe Gawler.Other recent hires include Technical Directors Charles Kouzouijian andChristian Zak who rejoin Schloss and Dowdell from their respectivepositions at Tape House Digital Film.

Joining Dowdell on the facility’s technical team is Thoma Thurau,who will serve as TCS-New York’s Chief Technology Officer. Thurau hasextensive background in both the technical underpinning ofpost-production, as well as the Leroy Street building specifically ashe designed the technical infrastructure of the building’s formeranchor tenant, The Shooting Gallery.

Within the next few months, the facility will be hard-wired using ahigh-speed shared private network, joining Technicolor’s New York postoperations with other facilities in North America and Europe, includingmultiple TCS locations in Los Angeles, Montreal, London, and ultimatelyall Technicolor facilities worldwide.

The new laboratory infrastructure at Leroy street will be broughtonline over the next 18 months and will include state-of-the-arttechnology to handle traditional 35mm and super 35mm color-processing,color 16mm processing, dailies printing, trailer printing and wet-gateprinting, and new screening environments.

Industry veteran Dan Pane, VP of Technicolor D-Film, will assume theleadership responsibilities for the new laboratory operation. Panejoined Technicolor’s CFI operation in 1999 from his position asdirector of post-production operations at The Post Group. Prior tothis, he managed Telecine Services at Technicolor’s Glendale-based postfacility, formerly known as Vidfilm International Digital. Afterreceiving an M.F.A. Degree in Film and Television from Brooklyn Collegein 1987, Pane served as manager of Post-Production Operations atCompact Video.
