‘Sunset Song’ Uses 65mm Film to Capture the Grandeur of Its Landscapes

To shoot Terence Davies’ WWI epic Sunset Song, cinematographer Michael McDonough opted for a mix of digital and large format film. In additon to the ARRI Alexa XT, he used the ARRI 765 to shoot on 65mm film.

“[65mm] gave a scope and grandeur to the landscape work that went hand in hand with the idea that the landscape was an equally important character within the story,” McDonough tells Televisual. “In many ways, it’s what the film is about – the land will endure.”
