Spike Lee’s new Showtime documentary Michael Jackson’s Journey from Motown to Off the Wall chronicles the singer’s journey from child star to pop superstar with the release of his seminal 1979 album, Off the Wall. It’s the second in what Lee hopes will be a trilogy celebrating Jackson’s music (the first focused on the album Bad).
“I told [Jackson’s estate] from the get-go we were going to focus on the music,” Lee tells NPR about his approach to the film. “His genius, the dance, the songwriting. All that other stuff, we’re not dealing with. That’s for somebody else to do. Not me. I’m not doing it.”
