Western ‘Hell or High Water’ Explores the “Pain of the American Dream”

Scottish director David Mackenzie’s Hell or High Water is a Texas tale about two brothers (Chris Pine and Ben Foster) who pull off a series of bank heists across the state. Mackenzie speaks to Filmmaker Magazine about the making-of the film and how classic American cinema, and his point-of-view as a foreigner, influenced the look of the film. 

“I love American cinema from the ’70s — pre-event cinema, that has real characters and situations and humanity and a free-wheeling style. All of the pain of the American dream,” says Mackenzie. “In a way, this is a way to throw back — not in a nostalgic way, but the original material felt like one could make a contemporary film with the spirit of the good ’70s cinema.”
