Director Doug Liman and cinematographer Roman Vasyanov discuss production challenges of their one-location action thriller.
“It started with Legos on my desk,” director Doug Liman told The Film Stage about the design of the titular wall at the center of his new movie, “I wish I could point to a more sophisticated approach.” Liman, whose past credits include “Swingers,” “The Bourne Identity” and “Edge of Tomorrow,” and his team were very precise in constructing the wall that would serve as the main set piece for the action-thriller, allowing it to serve as not just a physical location, but a crucial plot device in the film.
When the wall moved from Liman’s desk to the Mojave Desert, the task now fell on director of photography Roman Vasyanov to capture the environment and the stakes of the movie with the right gear. Vasyanov’s choice was to shoot on Super-16 film and with character-motivated camera movements.
“The camera serves the character’s behavior,” Vasyanov wrote in a piece on MovieMaker.com. “It’s not fancy, in-your-face camerawork—the audience hopefully doesn’t even notice it. If we’re successful they only notice the character. “The Wall” releases in theaters on May 12. Read Liman’s interview
