Laurent Fauchere, Chris Haak, Antoine Tinguely and Jakob Trollbäck, all of Trollbäck & Company, won the Creative Arts Emmy for title design for “Hysterical Blindness,” a Kruna Dream/Blum Israel Production in association with HBO Films. Accepting the award were Trollbäck, Fauchere and Tinguely. Nicole Amato, the Trollbäck & Company editor on the project, was also in attendance at the ceremony.

Fauchere, Jasmin Jodry, Tinguely and Trollbäck captured a second nomination for the opening of “Normal,” an Avenue Pictures Production in association with HBO Films, starring Jessica Lange and Tom Wilkinson.

In the flaring opening sequence of Nair’s film, Uma Thurman is being examined for a medical condition called hysterical blindness. The shots from the main character’s P.O.V. create the edgy feeling of the examination: blinding light and darkness intertwined. To achieve this effect, the designers pulled in and out of focus and used flashlights shot on digital video to provide organic light-source effects. An eye chart was used for the main title card. According to Jakob Trollbäck, “The sequence is the result of an amazing team effort at Trollbäck & Company and close collaboration with Mira Nair, with whom we first worked with on the opening of ‘Monsoon Wedding.’ Her incredible energy and creativity permeate every aspect of her work; it is always extremely contagious.” Lydia Pilcher served as executive producer.

HBO Films has been an ongoing client of the firm’s, and a new 2:30 spot for HBO, “Behind the Scenes,” is among its most recent projects. An HBO Films image spot, “Visions. Realized,” which Trollbäck & Company created in collaboration with HBO Films, this year received PROMAX Gold and BDA Silver, as well as inclusion in the 2003 Applied Arts Design & Advertising Annual and 2003 Communication Arts Design Annual.
