Toolkit: September 2014

The DXA-POCKET compact audio adapter enables users to capture professional audio on DSLR cameras and camcorders including the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera. The two-channel device attaches wireless mics and self-powered camera-mounted microphones such as Rode VideoMics that have unbalanced mini-plug connectors. Its compact size fits neatly under or over the camera. Exceptionally low noise preamplifiers provide clean, wide bandwidth audio for full, rich sound. Dual trim controls allow signal levels to be adjusted independently, while the VU meters make it easy to set precise recording levels. Running time is about 10 hours on one 9V alkaline or lithium battery. The DXA-POCKET will be available on September 26 with a suggested list price of $249.

Smart Pro Fluid Head

The Smart Pro fluid head is an ideal support for DSLR and DV cameras weighing up to 13 lb. Compact and lightweight (4 lb.), Smart Pro features a continuously variable fluid damping system on both pan and tilt movements and Cartoni’s patented “wing” variable counterbalance system. Based on Cartoni’s HiDV Fluid Head, Smart Pro offers a variety of innovative touches including ergonomic knobs for ease of use, better control and a more fluid touch on drag and counterbalance. Tilting angle is +/- 90°. The head’s 75mm diameter bowl is compatible with all 75mm tripods and most current-generation slider attachments.

Convergent Design

Convergent Design’s Odyssey7, little sister to the Odyssey7Q, is an on-camera monitor and recorder. Its 7.7” OLED screen offers 1280 x 800 resolution and monitoring functions including programmable false color mode, zebras, waveform, histogram, built-in LUTs, programmable focus assist, and pixel zoom with two levels of magnification. With a recent firmware update, Odyssey7 supports recording of 1080i and 720p signals, as well as 24p signals embedded within 1080i video streams using 3:2 pull-down. Record formats in Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) include 1080/30p, 1080/60i, 1080/50i, 1080/(24 over)60i, 720/60p and 720/50p. Odyssey7 has both SDI and HDMI inputs. It functions as a signal converter as well, with an SDI and an HDMI output that are both active at all times. List price is $1,295.

The simple, sturdy and lightweight MatthewsSLIDER camera platform is virtually maintenance-free and field adjustable with just a 7/16” open wrench and a set of Allen wrenches. It can function upside-down for low-angle shots, and can support more than one carriage at a time for A- and B-camera setups. It has positive lock at 90 degrees when in use on most dollies. Each carriage can support up to 175 lb. The proprietary wheels with ABEC5 stainless bearings and ceramic balls make MatthewsSLIDER very fast and extremely quiet. MatthewsSLIDER comes in four sizes—29”, 35”, 45” and 70”—as well as custom lengths in 4.75” increments. Fully factory assembled, MatthewsSLIDER will accept any gear head/fluid head/camera combination.

Air Tripod System

The Air Tripod System range includes the Air Alloy System (3001) and Air Carbon Fibre System (3005)—each a versatile, lightweight tripod system that can be set up quickly in rugged outdoor conditions. Each system consists of an Air Fluid Head and a variant of the Solo 75 two-stage tripod; the Air Alloy System features the alloy version of the Solo 75 tripod, while the Air Carbon Fibre System offers the lighter Solo 75 carbon fiber model. (The Air Carbon Fibre System weighs 9.9 pounds versus the Air Alloy System’s 10.8 pounds.) Both models have the ability to support payloads ranging from 5.5 to 11 pounds. The Solo 75 tripod extends from 9.2 inches to 64 inches.

PXW-X70 XDCAM Professional Camcorder

The PXW-X70 is the first XDCAM model to combine the format’s file-based capabilities with a compact form factor. The camera weighs less than 3 lb. including XLR handle, battery, lens hood and eye cup. It records HD video in XAVC Long GOP, delivering 4:2:2 10-bit sampling at 50 Mb/s to support broadcast-quality workflows. The PXW-X70 includes Wi-Fi-enabled control via smartphones or tablets. An upgrade is planned that will enable the 4K-ready PXW-X70 to record in 4K and to perform file transfer and live video streaming. The PXW-X70 features a 1” type Exmor R CMOS Sensor with a resolution of 20 megapixels. Professional interfaces include 3G-SDI and HDMI output connectors. The PXW-X70 will be available in the fall with a list price of $2,599.
