Storage: Managing Media for Content Creators

In this month’s Buyer’s Guide we examine a number of storage solutions available for creative professionals, each designed to keep your content secure and readily accessible. Storage continues to be a critical component of the production and post process. As Mark Coleman of Time Warner Cable Sports Regional Networks explains, “Storage might have the perception of being just a ‘commodity,’ but in reality it’s anything but. If we lose content, we lose time, we lose money, we lose productivity and we lose the ability to tell the story.”

Palm RAID is a 512 GB bus-powered Thunderbolt storage device designed for speed and portability. The Thunderbolt interface achieves transfer speeds up to 10 Gb/s and allows the compact drive to operate on bus power alone. With the unit’s two mSATA SSDs in a RAID 0 software RAID, the Palm RAID achieves a throughput performance of about 713 MB/s read and 414 MB/s write. This product supports Windows 7/8 and Mac OS X. Fanless cooling allows silent operation. The AKiTiO Palm RAID is available now for $649.

EditPRO 12G Series

The 12G SAS technology powering EditPRO 12G SAS Expander RAID storage solutions from CineRAID provides up to 48 Gb/s or 4,800 MB/s data bandwidth, sufficient for even the most intensive digital video applications. The built-in 12G SAS expansion port enables users to daisy-chain additional expander chassis, up to 256 HDDs total. Built-in DataBolt bandwidth optimizer technology empowers existing 6 Gb/s drives to take advantage of full 12 Gb/s speeds by buffering 6 Gb/s data, then transferring it out to the host at 12 Gb/s speeds in order to match the bandwidth between faster hosts and slower SAS or SATA devices. Includes a high performance 12G SAS PCIe 3.0 RAID controller, executing over 3,000 MB/s in read/write speeds.

Dot Hill Systems Corp.

Ultra48 AssuredSAN Storage Arrays

Targeted at customers with throughput-intensive applications, Dot Hill’s high-performance, ultra-density Ultra48 AssuredSAN storage arrays use a patent-pending enclosure developed by Dot Hill to maximize storage processing power in a minimal rack footprint. The Dot Hill ultra-density chassis houses nearly 58 TB of data on 2.5” HDDs, while utilizing 23 percent less power in an efficient 2U footprint. For high performance transaction workloads, the array can support any combination of SSD and HDD drives in the same enclosure. The Ultra48 chassis is designed with three removable drawers that each hold 16 2.5” HDDs or SSDs. The system architecture incorporates fully redundant and hot swappable components and provides easy serviceability. Ultra48 interfaces include 16Gb Fibre Channel, 10Gb iSCSI and 12Gb SAS.
