In a video interview with Indiewire, first-time writer/director Ryan Gosling gets candid on getting mixed reviews for his debut Lost River and what influenced his fairy tale-inspired noir.
Says Gosling, “It’s a fairy tale. He’s the prince. She’s the princess. There’s all these archetypes…When I was in these [Detroit] neighborhoods, in a way the physical world there felt like what it felt like to be a kid and I was brought back to that time in my life, films I was watching when I was that age. Which goes back to influences. The truth is the films that we referenced on this movie were The Goonies, The Secret of NIMH, and Purple Rain to a certain degree.”
