Playwright Kenneth Lonergan Carries Over the Importance of Dialogue to His Film ‘Manchester by the Sea’

Playwright Kenneth Lonergan’s third feature film as writer/director is the acclaimed Sundance drama Manchester by the Sea, which stars Casey Affleck as a haunted man granted guardianship of his teenage nephew after the death of his brother. The film also stars Michelle Williams as Affleck’s ex-wife.

Williams tells The New York Times how Lonergan’s background in theater informs his film work. “In theater, words are primary,” she says. “There’s nothing as important as what the character says next. Often in movies that’s not really the case, except in a Lonergan film, because he wrote those words. He’s actually quite specific in sticking to the script, as he should be.”
