‘Manchester by the Sea’ Director Kenneth Lonergan: Focusing on Human Struggle

Kenneth Lonergan talks to Film Comment about the motivating factors in the plot of his latest acclaimed film Manchester by the Sea, as well as his previous two films You Can Count on Me and Margaret. In Manchester by the Sea, Casey Affleck plays a haunted man who unwillingly returns to his hometown to assume guardianship of his orphaned nephew.

“What I’m really interested in is people struggling with situations that are bigger than they are, that are overwhelming to them,” he says. “Also the disparity of experience, the variety of human experience, how one person can have one kind of life and his neighbor will have a completely different kind in every respect. That never ceases to fascinate and confound me and also impress me.”
