In the below video from ARRI, cinematographer Greig Fraser talks about his work on new film Lion.
In Lion, Dev Patel plays a man separated from his family in India as a young boy who, as an adult, sets out on a virtually impossible journey to try to find them.
Says Fraser about shooting, “You very much have to edit your locations because there’s so much great stuff in India, that you could actually make a film on any street corner…Finding locations for a film is as much about the jumble of the story arcs and the narratives and the color shifts and the way things become bigger and smaller as the child goes from a small town to a big town. It’s important to try and find images that sum that up and give you the impression and help the audience understand, ‘Here’s a small child in a small town, which to him feels big, but then what happens when he gets into a massive town? What does a small child feel like in a massive town?'”
