‘Life After Beth’ Director Jeff Baena on Incorporating Philosophy Into a Zombie Comedy

I Heart Huckabee’s writer Jeff Baena makes his directorial debut with his zombie romantic comedy Life After Beth, starring his real-life girlfriend Aubrey Plaza.

Says Baena about incorporating philosophy into his scripts, “I was reading a lot of Jacques Derrida at the time, writing Beth. He actually talked about zombies. Zombies sort of typify this ambiguity, that they’re not dead and not alive. With Huckabees, that movie was wearing its philosophical ideas on its sleeve. It’s a little exhausting. This movie has a lot of those ideas, but at the same time, it’s probably tracking more of the emotional landscape than the philosophical landscape.”
