Joe Berlinger’s new Netflix documentary Tony Robbins: I Am Not Your Guru is a profile of one of the motivational speaker’s 72-hour seminars.
“The thing I found so fascinating, and the main reason I wanted to make the film and make it in a certain style, is that I have never seen, in my life, a group of 2,500 people like this in an environment where boundaries between people so quickly fall,” Berlinger tells Fandor. “Everyone is there for self-interested reasons [but] I don’t think it’s bad. Everyone is there to improve some aspect of their lives. But what quickly happens is that they realize they’re not just there to help themselves but they’re there to help each other. That’s a very special environment that, as I said, I’ve never experienced before…My film is designed to evoke empathy in people if they want it, but I can’t tell people how to feel, and I don’t really care about pleasing everybody.”
