James Schamus Talks His Distinctive Style for ‘Indignation’

In an interview with Deadline at Sundance, former Focus Features head James Schamus speaks about his directorial debut, Indignation–adapted from a Philip Roth novel.

Says Schamus, “I knew for this particular work to function as a movie, it had to have a distinctive style. But I didn’t want to box my actors into any particular, exact approach that would not let them breathe. So, it was really a back and forth. I let them know that we were shooting a very specific way. The camera stayed very stable a lot of the time…but at the same time, I wanted to be able to work with them and let them participate in helping us create this world that they could really live in.”
