Inside the Clandestine Filming of Sundance’s ‘Operation Avalanche’

Sundance film Operation Avalanche tells the story of a group of CIA agents who infiltrate NASA during the late 1960s and decide to ultimately fake the moon landing…with the help of Stanley Kubrick no less.

The extraordinary thing is that it was, in fact, filmed under false pretenses.

“We called NASA and said, ‘Hey we’re making documentary about the Apollo program, can we come shoot it there?’ And they said, yes,” director Matt Johnson said at a post-screening Q&A. “So all those scenes where you see me saying, ‘Oh we’re just making a documentary’ or introducing myself as a documentary filmmaker? That’s real.”
