Swedish director Ruben Östlund, who started out his career making ski films, looks to both skiing and YouTube videos for the inspiration behind his fourth feature film, Force Majeure–a dramedy about a decaying marriage.
As lead actor Johannes Bah Kunke explains for a particular scene where his character Tomas breaks down into an ugly cry, “We wanted to take it so far away from what we’re used to see when we see the perfect cry with a stone face and a single tear rolling down his cheek. We wanted to go really, really over the top. Ruben sent me a clip from YouTube called the “Worst Man Cry Ever.” But it was very important for me not to play the comedy and actually play a real cry, a real cry but taken very hard.”
