How to Light Stop-Motion Animation Like Aardman

In the below video, cinematographer Dave Alex Riddett explains how he lights the stop-motion animated sets of Aardman Animations, famous for Wallace and Gromit, Shaun the Sheep, and various other productions.

“It’s closer to theater lighting, what we do,” says Riddett. “We have to be incredibly precise about the lighting. It has to be incredibly robust and it has to be repeatable. Camera moves have to be repeatable. Focus pulls have to be repeatable. It’s probably a closer parallel to theater lighting.”
