HBO’s ‘Westworld’ Explores a World of A.I. and Dubious Morality

HBO’s new fantasy series Westworld plays with the concepts of artificial intelligence, virtual reality and the questionable morality of humans. The show takes place in a Wild West-themed park where visitors are able to live out their fantasies–as dark as they may be–with the robots who live there.

“In preparation for the project we went back and played Grand Theft Auto a little bit,” co-creator Jonathan Nolan tells Fast Company. “We’re sort of fascinated by, not just the state of the art in terms of the companies that are actively pursing machine intelligence, but [by] gaming. Gaming is another forefront to AI. It’s now a massive industry.”
