With credits like “God’s Perfect Idiot” substituting for Ryan Reynold’s name and macro visuals that showcase both the action and comedy of the blockbuster film, the tongue-in-cheek opening titles for Deadpool are a perfect set-up for the sarcastic, meta humor of the superhero movie.
“We were trying to find the right balance [comedically],” director Tim Miller tells Art of the Title. “We weren’t going for big laughs, we were going for chuckles. So it was more of a reductive process. We had more jokes in there initially, but it felt cluttered. The audience spent so much time trying to decode what the jokes were that they didn’t enjoy the ones there. So we pulled it back.”
