Editor Ron Patane talks to the Editors Guild about the challenges of cutting his most recent endeavor, J.C. Chandor’s A Most Violent Year.
“The movie has a lot of dialogue in it, even though it’s punctuated with action. Almost every scene is two or three people talking. I think that’s one of the challenges: How do you sustain that, how do you take a break from it?” Patane says. “There was a lot we had to do to keep it moving forward, with dialogue scene after dialogue scene. There was also the challenge of what stays in or gets cut out because it’s not moving the story forward, trying to find the heart of the movie. Then there were structural challenges, where we moved things around.”
