‘Demolition’ Director Jean-Marc Vallée Captures Performance and Reality with Loose Shooting Style

Demolition, Jean-Marc Vallée’s (Dallas Buyers Club, Wild) third film in three years, stars Jake Gyllenhaal as a man with an unusual reaction to his wife’s death.

Vallée’s shooting style is loose and fast, often working handheld and with available light. “[This approach] allows him to capture performance and reality—he never misses anything,” Gyllenhaal tells MovieMaker Magazine. “Everything is filmed in respect to emotional instinct. It is incredibly freeing for performance, because everything and nothing is precious at the same time.”
