In an effort to take fan engagement to a new level, D.C. United, a Major League Soccer team that plays at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C., chose Telestream Wirecast live streaming software to produce and stream professional-quality content for our fans on Facebook Live. Wirecast lets us to create a professional online broadcast completely on par with what’s being shown on air by the ASN (American Sports Network). We have Telestream Wirecast set up in the OB truck and we share camera feeds with the broadcast crew. The graphics department supplies us with the slates so that branding and graphics treatments match completely.
We like the simplicity of Wirecast and find the different layers an intuitive way to work, since anyone who has edited video before is likely to understand the paradigm. We can just hop right on, create different layers for graphics, turn them on and off—it’s so easy. After playing around for 10 minutes I had the basics of it, but at the same time there’s plenty of potential to do more and raise the bar for next season.
One my favorite features in Wirecast is the ability to test the stream before it goes live on Facebook. I test the stream output before every show. Our stadium is historic, and with that comes the occasional internet issue, so being able to set up a stream quickly and test it to make sure everything is working gives me confidence and peace of mind.
