Creating a Multigenerational Fable Out of ‘Joy’

It took a circutous route to get to director David O. Russell and star Jennifer Lawrence, but new film Joy–loosely based on the life of entrepreneur Joy Mangano–is the pair’s third collaboration and a true testament to how much clout the duo hold in Hollywood.

“This was the first time Jennifer and I did something together in which she’s not playing someone who is crazy,” Russell tells The Hollywood Reporter, adding that Lawrence asked the execs at Fox, “‘Could David and I do it the way we want to do it? It’s going to be its own animal. It’s going to be a multigenerational fable, and it’s going to be different.'”
