Carol director Todd Haynes talks to Fast Company‘s Co.Create about making the subtleties of the romance shine in his film about two women who fall in love in 1950s New York.
“Words were never going to be the most reliable conveyors of information or emotion or expression. Other things would have to be used to communicate information in the movie,” says Haynes. “The whole thing about love stories is what you don’t give the audience. The satisfactions you don’t provide them with. All that stuff stokes desire on the part of the viewer. It’s the viewer who is really the active party in the silence.”
