‘Carol’ Cinematographer Delves Into Decision to Shoot on Film

To capture the feel of the era its set in (the 1950s) cinematographer Edward Lachman and director Todd Haynes decided to shoot the Cannes-premiering feature Carol on film.

Says Lachman, “The choice that we still work in film and we chose to shoot Super 16, it wasn’t just on a budgetary level, but we reference the grain structure and the way film looks and feels. It has an emotional quality to it that you can’t get digitally.”
