In this month’s Buyer’s Guide we examine a number of microphones designed for production, each engineered to provide pristine audio.
A handheld interview microphone, DPA Microphones’ d:facto offers voice clarity and linearity, as well as minimal handling and wind noise.
Featuring an omnidirectional pattern, the microphone uses the same head for both wired and wireless work, so production teams have the flexibility to employ it with current and future pro wireless brands and standards.

The MicroLite series of miniature wearable reference microphones offers superior sound quality and durability in a tiny, discreet form factor. The series includes lavalier, ear-hook and headworn options. The tiny LC81 MD cardioid lavalier microphone features a diameter of 4.8mm, a length of 10mm and a weight of 2g. The microphone’s sensitive cardioid polar pattern picks up a wide range of frequencies and provides flexibility in getting the best sound from the source. The LC82 MD omni-directional lavalier microphone, with a diameter of 3mm and length of 6.5mm, features a moisture-resistant design.
The AT2020USBi cardioid condenser USB microphone features high-resolution audio recording and compatibility with iOS, Windows and Mac OS X devices. Modeled after the AT2020, this digital output mic features an A/D converter with a 24-bit/96 kHz sampling rate to deliver high-resolution articulation and intelligibility appropriate for home studio recording, field recording, podcasting and voiceover use. The AT2020USBi works with both USB and Lightning cables (included). The integrated gain control adds to the convenience, allowing users to adjust the input level directly on the microphone.
Azden’s recently introduced i-COUSTICS line is designed to improve audio for smartphone and tablet users. The newest i-COUSTICS product, PRO-XD, is an ultra small, high-performance digital wireless lavalier microphone system that operates on 2.4 GHz, so interference is never a concern. High gain output alleviates noise and hiss produced by low-quality camera preamps. The transmitter and receivers link to each other quickly and up to four systems can be used simultaneously. The PRO-XD is compatible with action cams, DSLRs, video cameras and most mobile devices.
RØDE announces its smallest ever on-camera microphone, and latest addition to the VideoMic family, the VideoMicro. Made from ultra-light aluminum, it includes the Rycote Lyre shock mount and a furry windshield. A directional microphone, VideoMicro reduces distracting peripheral sounds and focuses on the audio in front of the camera. Its pickup is more forgiving than RØDE’s other on-camera microphones, providing a more natural sound when recording indoors. Rycote Lyre, featuring a suspension structure composed of a hard-wearing thermoplastic, is far more effective at minimizing unwanted vibrations, handling and cable-borne noise than traditional elastic suspensions.
