Cinematography Database’s Matt Workman examines the stylistic and technical choices of Birdman cinematographer Emmanuel “Chivo” Lubezki, who shot the film as if it were one long take.
Explains Workman, “To keep the camera and the actors free to move in basically 360, Chivo pushed the Alexa to 1280 ISO and shot close to wide open. This allowed him to light with practical sources (lamps, make up mirrors, etc.) and available light. In some of the long tracking shots there are several strategically placed overhead fluorescent banks for the actors to walk through.”
