The Art of Editing to Music

Fandor’s Mark Asch examines scenes from Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger’s 1940 film Contraband, as well as Claire Denis’s 35 Shots of Rum, to dissect the art of cutting scenes to musical tracks.

He writes, “Music, in fact, provides multiple plot points in [Contraband], and by looking at the editing to music within an individual scene, we can see how sequences share the satisfyingly shipshape structure of the whole.”
